Eco Printing & Painting with Pigments

Class Schedule: 9am-5pm both days
(Saturday & Sunday) with a lunch break each day.

Learn all about natural pigments for creative processes! During this weekend workshop at Sanborn Mills Farm, students will learn the basics of eco printing and painting with locally foraged plants and food waste onto different types of fabric and paper, as well as beginner book arts techniques to create small, folded and stitched books. This immersion into the farm campus and current season will help to inform creative experiments throughout the two-day class. Participants will be encouraged to bring a couple fabric items from home to ‘jazz up’ and recycle into a new printed garment that holds memory of the weekend and season using plants. This class offers a combination of outdoor foraging, printmaking, photography, bookmaking and fiber processes, thereby offering a realm of possibilities that allow for full exploration with each mode of making.

Welcome to the wonderful world of natural color! Immerse yourself in the coastal landscape of Penobscot Bay through flora, minerals, and natural materials during this hands-on retreat at Fiber College of Maine. Mindfully forage colors for dyeing, printing and painting using natural materials from the local region. During this retreat, students will learn a set of skills to sustainably forage, coax, dye, paint, write, and print with organic pigments from the campground and local region. Multiple printmaking and fiber art methods will be introduced and experienced throughout the class, all of which are centered around place-based inspiration with respect for the Earth.

This class will focus on various cyanotype printing techniques on fabric and paper to create a series of prints, fabric patches and hand-bound books. Dive into the realm of this photographic printmaking process and book art methods in this hands-on class as a way to connect to the season and objects around us. Participants will learn the basics of cyanotype printing on different coated materials, hand stitching and embroidery techniques, as well as simple methods to create small, hand-bound books using the pamphlet stitch and accordion fold.

Spring Bird Walk & Cyanotype Printing

Join us at Osamequin Farm for a special collaboration this spring with Katama Murray & Nathaniel Sharp! This event will kickoff with a bird walk around the farm property and trails, followed by a hands-on art workshop focused on the cyanotype printing process. Towards the end of the educational outdoor walk led by Nathaniel, participants will learn about mindful foraging practices with Katama, and utilize natural objects from the farm to create cyanotype prints in the barn. Explore the creative possibilities within cyanotypes to make one of a kind prints! Learn the basics of capturing shadows through sun printing on both fabric and paper, utilizing different techniques for all levels of experience.
All ages and levels of experience are welcome - Children must be accompanied by a registered adult.

This four-session class will focus on creative techniques for making natural prints through the eco printing process on fabric and paper. Hidden color exists all around us, waiting to be transformed into works of art. There will be a focus on the safety of mordanting techniques and foraging techniques. Students will learn to create beautiful, one-of-a-kind pieces that can be admired forever while taking time to slow down and appreciate the richness and diversity of plant colors dwelling alongside us as Winter transitions to Spring.

Learn the basics of creating monotype prints using a variety of materials at Featherstone Center for the Arts! In this experimental workshop, participants will understand the process of using water-based inks to create one of a kind monoprints on paper through a press. Utilizing a plexiglass plate as the image matrix, elements of print and painting are combined to produce unique pieces. Unlike most printmaking processes which employ replication of a repeated image, monotypes encourage loose, imaginative making! Using a combination of added materials and expressive mark-making, students will create a series of monoprints and ‘ghost’ prints on paper which explore the creative potential within this print process.​
